Long Beaded Necklace Mixed String of Beads

Our Beading Patterns & Service

Which patterns are best for beginners?

All of our beading patterns are written so that beaders of any skill level can easily complete the project.  But, some projects are easier than others.  So, we've labeled all of our easiest beading patterns with the word "easy" in the top right corner so you can easily spot them.  View more information for beginners.

What if I get confused, or run into trouble with a pattern?

Don't hesitate to reach out - we're always happy to help!  And please, never feel like you're bugging us or asking "stupid questions" - you're not!

You can send us a message from either the Contact us page or by email and let us know how we can help.  If you want, you can even attach a picture of your project so we can see what's going on.  Most questions or concerns are often resolved with a quick message or two.

What if a pattern ends up being too hard, or I just don't enjoy it?

While we do our best to make patterns as fun and easy as possible, we recognize that some techniques just aren't for everybody.  We always want you to feel comfortable trying out new designs and techniques - just know that you're not stuck with a pattern you're not enjoying.  Please reach out and let us know.  We'll issue you a full refund - no questions asked.

Why charge for patterns when there's free content online?

We really appreciate folks who share their passions with others and post content for free online.  We regularly turn to the web for answers, and Cara and I often enjoy free content (watching funny animal videos is a favorite pick-me-up).  However, just because you can find content online for free, doesn't mean others shouldn't sell their quality products & services (i.e. authors, filmmakers, doctors, lawyers, architects, artists, jewelry designers and teachers).

The reality is, besides the generous folks who share their passion with the world for the pure joy of it (or bead stores who post free patterns to upsell their beading supplies), the rest post free content in order to earn passive income.  The more visitors they attract to their site, the more money they make from advertisers - who pay them for the advertising spots (ads, pop-ups, etc.) and/or the personal data they are able to collect from their visitors.  We personally don't enjoy aggressive pop-up ads and we definitely don't like to share our personal information with strangers - and we assume you feel the same way.  That's why -

We DO NOT sell advertising on any of our websites.  And, we do not share any information about you with anyone - ever!

We just offer super beading patterns at a fair price and provide terrific customer service because we truly appreciate our customers & want them to bead happy!

How do you price your patterns?

Our beading patterns are widely regarded around the world as the best written and photographed beading patterns available, and hands down the easiest to follow.  We put a lot of time and effort into making our beading tutorials which involve; working out the design, creating numerous color samples, photographing and writing instructions for each and every step, editing every photo, creating a detailed Materials page and Bead Color Legend, proofreading and posting the pattern.

We price our tutorials based upon the total number of steps in the pattern, which can range anywhere from 10 - 20 steps (for the simplest patterns) to 140 steps or more (for our more complicated designs).  With that said, even our longest and most involved patterns are still less expensive than most beading classes!

Do you offer any free patterns I can try to see what they're like?

Yes, we do.  Like most folks, we love free samples (one reason why Costco is one of our favorite places to shop - it's always nice to be able to sample something so you know what it's like).

Also, if you're new to  PDF beading patterns, downloading one of our free beading patterns is a great way of seeing how easy they are to download and view (and even print).

Help yourself to a couple of free samples - check out our free beading patterns now!

Can I make the same color scheme as you did?

Yes, go for it!  While our beading patterns are copyright protected, you are welcome to use the same colors that we did in any of our color samples.  Learn more about our copyright policy.

Note: All of our newer patterns include detailed bead color information that includes the type, manufacturer, and color of all beads and findings used in each color sample.  Please note our earliest patterns did not include such detailed bead color information for each of the color samples we made.  If you purchase an older pattern and want color information for a particular jewelry sample, just contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

Can I choose my own color scheme?

Of course!  You're always welcome to get creative with the color scheme to make it your own (and, we love to see pictures of your finished work, if you like to share!)

How do I know how many beads I'll need to buy?

All of our beading patterns include a detailed Materials page that tells you everything you'll need to make the project including bead types, sizes, and quantities of all required beading materials and tools.  So, you'll have everything you'll need once you purchase your pattern.

Where can I buy the same beads you use?

While we do list all of the materials that you'll need on the pattern, we usually don't tell you where to get them unless it is a very specific item that might be hard to find (which is very rare).  You can find what you need at your local bead store or favorite online retailers.  Here are a few that we shop at regularly: ArtBeads.com, ShipwreckBeads.com, Beadaholique.com, FusionBeads.com, and LimaBeads.com.

Can I buy beads from you?

Sorry, no.  You can find what you need at your local bead store or favorite online retailers.  Here are a few that we shop at regularly: ArtBeads.com, ShipwreckBeads.com, Beadaholique.com, FusionBeads.com, and LimaBeads.com.

Do beading patterns show how to attach the end clasps?

Yes, always!  Our patterns take you from start to finish, so that when you're done, all you have to do is put the jewelry on and admire your beautiful handiwork.

Can I have printed copies of patterns mailed to me?

Our patterns are in PDF format, so you can easily download and view them on any device (computer, tablet, phone, etc.), as well as print them directly from your PDF viewer (check out our tips for saving money when printing).

If you don't have access to a printer, you can easily email the PDF document to your local copy store and pay them to print it for you.  Because our patterns are copyrighted, they will (should) need our permission before printing the document.  Just contact us and let us know what their email address is so we can give them our okay.

Do you have a store I can visit?

We do not have a storefront that is open to the public. While we miss the opportunity to meet you in person, we do enjoy getting to know our customers via online interactions.

Can I request a pattern or make a suggestion?

We’re constantly working on fun new beading tutorials and always appreciate hearing what types of beading projects you want to make.  If you can’t find instructions on our website for how to make a particular design or technique, feel free to submit a suggestion to us.

Please note:  Cara and I respect other designer's copyrights and will not copy anyone else's original work.  If we feel inspired by your suggestion, and feel it may have a broader appeal to our customers, we may create a similar, but significantly different, designs of our own.  We'll let you know if/when we come up with something so you can take a look at it.  You are never under any obligation to purchase the pattern we design.

Are your patterns available in any other languages?

All of our beading patterns are written in English.  We are, however, in the process of translating our patterns into numerous additional languages, based upon customer requests.

As an aside, beaders around the world who don’t speak English reach out and let us know that they often don’t even need to translate our instructions because the step-by-step photos are typically all they need to follow our patterns!

How often do you have sales?

Everybody loves a sale, and we try to have them frequently.  If you want to make sure you don't miss a sale, sign up for our newsletter to be notified!

Where can I find a coupon code?

Coupon codes are included in our email newsletter that we send out to subscribers.  If you'd like to take advantage of our special sales, be sure to subscribe today!  You can also check the top banner on our home page for special sales.

How does "Bundle and Save!" work?

When we’re designing jewelry, Cara and I often ask ourselves (and each other) if the design we’re initially working on lends itself to any complementary pieces that could be part of a jewelry set or larger collection.  If it does, we’ll often take the added time to explore and design complimentary pieces.

If a pattern has related designs that are part of a set or larger collection, those separate designs will be listed below the product description, under the title "Bundle and Save!".  If you wish to purchase multiple pieces at the same time, just add the desired "bundle" to your cart.  That way, you'll get the shown discount off of the additional pieces you're purchasing.

Can I combine a coupon code with a current sale?

No, we're sorry.  Unless specifically stated, coupons and sales cannot be combined.

Please note: Coupon codes are case sensitive and must be spelled correctly.  If you have any trouble entering your coupon code, please contact us.

How do I download and view my beading patterns?

First, you need to locate the download link for the pattern you wish to open and view.  See the previous question and answer for how to find the download link for your new pattern, or view our How to Download a Tutorial page for easy step-by-step directions.

Then, click on each download link (one at a time, if you purchased more than one) and select whether you would like to open and view the pattern using your default PDF viewer, or save the file first to a specific folder on your computer and then open it. The program most widely used to view PDF files, and the one we like best, is Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free.

Can I print my beading pattern, and what's the cheapest way?

Yes, you may print your beading pattern so you can reference a hard copy while you work on the project.  However, please keep in mind that our copyright policy must be respected - which means that you may not share, sell, or give away a printed copy of our pattern to anyone, under any circumstances.

What's your copyright policy?

As a professional artist for 40 years, and having had served as an art commissioner for our small town, I have had ample opportunity to discuss the finer points of copyright law with fellow artists and can say, without a doubt, that there are almost as many perspectives on the issue as there are artists.  The debate over originality and copyright protection has exploded, in pace with the availability of unlimited inspiration found on the Internet.  After careful research, (which included our review of copyright law and cases that have been brought before the courts, as well as the published positions of several industry leaders including Etsy and Bead & Button magazine), we feel that it is still too hard to clearly discern, with absolute certainty in some circumstances, what constitutes an original design or derivative work and what falls under the common domain.  With that said, we have arrived at our personal position with regards to copyrights and have attempted to clearly define how you may use our beading patterns so that you have a level of comfort in knowing what your rights are when using our products.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Our beading patterns:

We copyright our written and photographed beading patterns, as well as our photographs, which represent our original and unique intellectual property (just like a book).  As such, making copies of our tutorials (in full or part), to either share, sell or give away, is strictly prohibited by law and we will not hesitate to report any infringement of our copyrights to the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice for investigation and prosecution. We understand the temptation, but please respect our copyrights, as this is the sole means we have to support ourselves. If you cannot afford one of our patterns, or know someone who has difficulty affording a pattern, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly do what we can to help out with the price – we’ve been there, and we’re all in this together.

Our jewelry designs:

Our jewelry designs include projects that are made using popular beading techniques (that fall under the common domain, and as such, are not restricted by copyright), variations of popular beading techniques, and, as far as we know, completely original works.  As many artists do, we have often been inspired, whether consciously or unconsciously, by other jewelry designs we run across (sometimes years earlier).  We never knowingly duplicate another artist’s jewelry design without getting their permission and/or referencing their original design.  If and when we create a design that we know has been inspired by a published piece, we take great pains to create our own unique design by making changes to the process, materials and/or finished feel of the piece (meeting the two criteria the U.S. courts have used to determine whether two pieces of jewelry have “substantial similarity”).

Further reading:

There are numerous articles attempting to disseminate copyright law and how it specifically applies to jewelry design, and if you are interested, we encourage you to research it further.  We found an article written and published on Etsy, a globally known and highly respected artisan marketplace, to be clearly written and informative.  View this article.

Thank you for taking the time to review our copyright policy.

Can I sell jewelry I make using your patterns?

Yes!  We have absolutely no problem with your selling the jewelry that you make using our tutorials.  In the past, we did ask that you give us credit for our original copyrighted designs, however, we no longer feel the personal need to require you to disclose our authorship and copyright, as we feel that it may inhibit your ability to promote and sell your handiwork.  But, just as we don’t claim other people’s work as our own, we ask that you not represent our design(s) as your own (i.e. you can proudly say that you made the piece, but please don’t claim that you designed it).

Can I teach your patterns?

Not without receiving our explicit permission and following a few specific guidelines.  If you are interested in teaching any of our designs, you must contact us and we will go over our teaching policy with you.

Can I share a pattern I bought with a friend or group?

No, you cannot share our copyrighted pattern.  Each person must have their own purchased copy of the pattern (unless they live in the same household).  We understand the temptation, but please respect our copyrights, as this is the sole means we have to support ourselves and our family.  Copyright infringement is a crime and we will not hesitate to report any infringement of our copyrights to the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice for investigation and prosecution. We understand the temptation, but please respect our copyrights, as this is the sole means we have to support ourselves.

If your group would like to get together to make one of our designs, each person must have their own purchased copy of the pattern.  Please feel free to contact us and let us know how many copies of the pattern will be needed and we'll see what we can do to give you a price break, based on volume.

Can our bead store sell your patterns?

Not without receiving our explicit permission and signing our reseller agreement.  If you are interested in re-selling any of our copyrighted beading patterns, you must contact us and we will go over our reseller policy with you.

What should I do if I see someone violating your copyright?

If you suspect that someone is violating our copyright, whether it's online or in-person, please don't hesitate to let us know.  We will contact the individual and handle the matter, without mentioning you in any way.  We truly appreciate you keeping an eye out for us and having our backs.  This is our livelihood and we put a look of hard work into each of our beading patterns.  We appreciate you respecting our copyright, and for being a valued customer!

What's your privacy policy?

We value your privacy as much as our own and do everything within our power to keep it safe.  Below is the information we collect and what we do, and don't do, with it.

When placing an order, all we ask for is your first and last name, email address, city, state, zip, and country (so we have a general sense of where our customers are located).  We DO NOT ask for (or store) any additional personal information (such as your street address, phone number, birthday or credit card number).  If you pay with a credit card, once you proceed to check out, the secure payment interface will ask for your street address and credit card information to complete the order.  This information is not captured or stored on our Simple Bead Patterns website at all.
